This piece was inspired by a Hausa folktale I heard about a trickster whose lies eventually led to his exile. I wanted the portrait to feel almost like a mug shot, with the brambles surrounding him symbolizing his isolation and exile. I’m really drawn to oral folklore and the way stories have been passed down through generations to teach lessons and preserve memory, so I wanted to bring that idea into a visual form.
